1. Measure Your Available Space
First, you’ll want to make sure you have enough space to play comfortably. The dimensions of your game room and your personal preference are both important when choosing what size of table you want. Professional or tournament-style tables are 8 feet, whereas the pool tables in most bars are only 7 feet.
To play comfortably on an 8-foot table with standard-length cues, you really need a space about 14 feet wide and 18 feet long. With a 7-foot table, you usually only need a 13-foot by 17-foot space. This is important to consider as you don’t want to spend all the money on a new table only to find that the space is too cramped to play properly.
2. Consider the Type of Table and Quality of the Materials
The actual table can be made from a few different materials. Synthetic tables made from particle board or honeycomb plastic are less expensive and much lighter weight. However, they also tend to not last as long and can eventually start to have issues with surface warping.
Slate tables are the best option if you can afford them as they will last longer and the surface shouldn’t ever warp. However, slate tables can be extremely heavy so this is also something to consider should you ever need to move the table.
